Northeast Africa is an incredibly diverse area of the world with a number of vibrant music cultures. I was inspired to create this web site during my first ethnomusicological research trip to Ethiopia in 2015, during which several musicians requested that I help to expose the world to Ethiopia’s many different kinds of music. Happy to oblige, I have begun the process of gathering recordings and information on this topic and bringing it all together in one location for the convenience of the casual world music enthusiast (or the random web surfer who is wondering how you got here).

The information on this web site is largely derived from my dissertation research in Ethiopia's western Gambella region, on the South Sudanese border, so the songs and musical practices here are focused on this area. Eventually, the plan is for this site's offerings to expand to include more regions of Ethiopia, South Sudan, and northeastern Africa generally as I have the opportunity to conduct more field research.

Also, be sure to check out some of my other projects, including Sounds of the West African Djembe, a Music Map of Northeast Africa, a library of World Music Artists and Resources, and a page highlighting the Women Musicians of Africa.
